Editing Guide

Editing happens overnight after filming ends at 17:00. This is the sequence. 30% of your score lives here.

Software Picks

Recommended (easiest first)

SoftwarePlatformWhy
CapCutPhone / DesktopFree, fast, lots of templates, auto-captions
DaVinci ResolveDesktopFree, professional, great color grading
Premiere ProDesktopIndustry standard, fast if you know it
iMovieMac/iOSFree, simple, enough for this job
Rule: Use software you ALREADY know. A competition is not the time to learn Premiere from scratch. CapCut on a phone can win if the content is strong.

2-Hour Editing Workflow

Follow this order. Don't skip around. Each phase has a deadline.

TimePhaseWhat to Do
0:00–0:10Import & OrganizeImport all footage. Rename: HOOK, EXT-1, INT-1, DRIVE-1, etc. Create folders per section.
0:10–0:30Rough CutDrag footage to timeline in script order. Hook → Intro → Ext → Int → Drive → Honest → Verdict. Don't trim yet, just sequence.
0:30–1:00Fine CutCut the bad stuff. Remove long pauses, "um"s, bad angles. Pace: every shot max 5-8 seconds unless it's you talking.
1:00–1:15Text & GraphicsAdd car name, price, specs overlays. Use CapCut templates or simple text. Don't over-design.
1:15–1:30AudioLevel voice: must be clear. Cut dead silence. If music: -20dB behind voice. Don't use copyrighted music.
1:30–1:45Color & PolishBrightness/contrast to taste. Don't over-filter. Make sure your face is clearly visible in all presenter shots.
1:45–2:00Export & UploadExport: 1080p, 30fps. Check the file plays correctly. Upload to the provided Drive. Verify upload succeeded.
Deadline: Video must be uploaded to Drive before Day 2 at 9:00 AM WIB. If upload is slow, export early and upload from there. Don't wait until the last minute.

Editing Tips

What makes a review good vs bad

  • Pace: No static shot longer than 8 seconds. Cut to something else.
  • Jump cuts: Totally fine. Presenter talking while cutting = accepted YouTube style.
  • B-roll: When talking about the exterior, SHOW the exterior. Don't just show your face.
  • Text overlay: Spec numbers must be written on screen, not just spoken. "204 hp" on screen when you say the number.
  • First 3 seconds of hook: If the first 3 seconds are boring, viewers leave. Start with the most interesting thing.
  • Verdict pose: Final shot should be you standing/sitting in front of the car, talking directly to camera. Strong closing.

Text Overlays That Must Be On Screen

  • Car name + price (during intro)
  • Key specs when mentioned (hp, torque, range, fuel economy)
  • Your name / review title (during hook or closing)
  • Score if you use one (during verdict)

Common Editing Mistakes

  • Music too loud — voice can't be heard
  • Shots too long — viewers get bored
  • No text overlays — spec numbers disappear
  • Over color grading — face turns orange/green
  • Wrong export format — file can't be opened by judges
  • Late upload — failed submission
